ACCESS to Offer College Prep Class with HFCC

Henry Ford Community CollegeACCESS will collaborate with Henry Ford Community College to pilot a for-credit college preparation course. The course aims to help students successfully transition to and complete community college education.  Data shows that youth and young adults in low income communities are less likely to enroll in college, and for those who do enroll, their chances of succeeding are low. The idea behind this initiative is to "bring the college to the community" to ease them into the experience, as well as to help them achieve academic success once enrolled.

This is a unique project because it will take place at the ACCESS Youth & Family Center, not at HFCC. The course will offer wrap around support that helps to ensure student success. This project targets high school seniors, as well as adult students between the ages of 21-24 residing in south Dearborn and southwest Detroit.  This geographic area was selected due to the high low-income and immigrant population in these communities. South Dearborn is also geographically and socially isolated from the balance of Dearborn, as well as surrounding cities. The program targets students with at least a 1.8 G.P.A, but less than a 3.2 G.P.A. The class starts September 21 and runs through December 17. The class will meet Tuesday and Thursday, 3:00-4:30 and the ACCESS youth and family Center. For more information please contact Justine Flores at jflores@accesscommunity.org.
